Diagnostic accuracy of thyroid cytology reporting between a general and a specialist histopathology department, over a five year period

چکیده
In the United Kingdom (UK), thyroid cytology reporting system is based on the British Thyroid Association (BTA)/Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) Thy terminology. This classification includes Thy1 (non-diagnostic), Thy2 (benign), Thy3a (cytological/ architectural atypia), Thy3f (suggestive of a follicular neoplasm), Thy4 (suspicious of malignancy) and Thy5 (malignant). This system allows consistent and reproducible reporting of thyroid cytology specimens, and provides a basis for clear communication on which the management of patients with abnormal FNAs can be based.1,2

Diagnostic Accuracy of Frozen Section in Comparison With Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in Thyroid Lesions – A Prospective Study
Background and Objectives: Thyroid gland because of its superficial location is amenable to direct physical examination. Clinical assessment of thyroid lesions by means of physical examination, thyroid scans and ultrasonography is not completely reliable. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the most cost-effective, safe and an initial diagnostic test in the pre-operative evaluation of thy...

متن کاملA Study of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Thyroid Lesions with Histopathological Correlation
Background: Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is important for pre-operative and pre-treatment diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid lesions, thus decreasing the incidence of unwanted surgeries. Objectives: The present study aims to classify various cytomorphological lesions of the thyroid according to The Bethesda System for Reporting of Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) and correlate th...
متن کاملACCURACY OF INTRAOPERATIVE FROZEN SECTION DIAGNOSIS AND TOUCH IMPRINT CYTOLOGY: STUDY ON 1000 CONSECUTIVE CASES
Frozen section and touch imprint cytology are important diagnostic procedures for surgeons during operation and must be accurate if the patient is to receive maximum benefit. To assess the accuracy of intraoperative pathologic consultation including frozen section and touch imprint cytology during a five year period (1995- 2000), a retrospective survey of 1000 consecutive cases of frozen s...
متن کاملDiagnostic accuracy of Bethesda system for reporting thyroid cytopathology: an institutional perspective
INTRODUCTION Thyroid swelling is common problem among South Asian women. Although benign nodules far outnumber cancerous lesions, the risk of malignancy needs to be evaluated preoperatively for which fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is widely used. Bethesda system for reporting thyroid cytopathology (BSRTC) was introduced to streamline the reporting of thyroid aspirates. We aimed to evalu...
